Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Medicated Magic 2002

Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Medicated Magic 2002
Label: Rope a Dope
Recording at: Allaire Studio, Chokan, New York.

Jazz

Since their birth in 1977, the pioneering Dirty Dozen Brass Band has extended the New Orleans Second Line tradition into rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Led by trumpeter-vocalist Gregory Davis, the nonet is joined by several cutting-edge guest artists. Dr. John lends his Crescent City piano chords and deep-south vocals on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" and the festive "Big Chief." The gravel-voiced John Bell, of Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic, chimes in on the hip-shaking "Walk on Gilded Splinters." Robert Randolph's ghostly steel pedal guitar casts its spell on Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is," and the young diva Norah Jones's tender Texas twang graces the ballad "Ruler of My Heart." DJ Logic's turntable scratches provide the gumbo on the autobiographical "We Got Robbed," and the Mississippi-born blues bard Olu Dara adds his Delta-derived voice to "Junko Partner." Throughout the CD, the DDBB brings Big Easy grooves into the 21st century.

A plethora of guests sweeten the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's 2002 release, MEDICATED MAGIC. With Dr. John, Norah Jones, DJ Logic, Olu Dara, John Bell of Widespread Panic, and others on board, these New Orleans natives kick out the jams Big Easy ...    Full Descriptionstyle. Amid the classic party anthems featured are the Meters' "Sissy Strut," Dr. John's "Walk on Guilded Splinters," and the Mardi Gras anthems "Big Chief" and "Junko Partner." Throughout there's no shortage of spot-on musicianship, interesting flavors, and gutbucket funkiness.

Medicated Magic is a fitting celebration of a New Orleans institution's silver anniversary. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have played festivals and funerals, earned five-star reviews from Downbeat and Jazz Times, performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Branford Marsalis, and delighted audiences from New York to Berlin to Tokyo and just about everywhere in between. Says Lewis, reflecting on his band's success, "You look at the encyclopedia and you see all these famous places, and then one day you wake up and you're in the picture!" But he knows that it's all about giving people the good time they're looking for: "When you come to our concert, you get something for your body, your mind and your soul. I don't wake up in the morning and say this is gonna be this kind of music, that's gonna be that. I just wake up and pick up my saxophone and bring some joy and happiness into some people's lives."
