A rare moment in time -- documented in this legendary meeting of two American modernists on the European scene of the 60s! The session features a 1965 performance by the George Russell Sextet, but is especially noteworthy for the presence of Don Cherry -- making a key guest appearance on the record during immediate post-Ornette modes, and really stretching out into a very different sound with Russell! Russell's still very much in the grip of his "lydian mode" writing of the 50s -- which is great, because Russell's modalism was a strong influence on the sound of other MPS/Saba artists of the 60s. The group features Bertil Loevgren on trumpet alongside Cherry, plus Brian Trentham on trombone, Ray Pitts on tenor, Cam Brown on bass, and Albert Heath on drums. Titles include a great extrapolation on "You Are My Sunshine" -- plus "Lydia and Her Friends", "Lydia In Bag's Groove", "Lydia Round Midnight", "Lydia's Confirmation", "Oh Jazz Po Jazz", "Volupte", and "Freein' Up".

This intriguing double LP (the music has not yet been reissued on CD) was innovative composer George Russell's first recording after breaking up his young combo of the early '60s. Recorded in Germany at a concert, Russell (who plays fairly basic piano) is joined by cornetist Don Cherry, trumpeter Bertil Lovgren, trombonist Brian Trentham, tenor saxophonist Ray Pitts, bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath for explorations of several lengthy pieces and a remake of "You Are My Sunshine." Most unusual is a suite dedicated to Russell's Lydian concept that includes abstract versions of "Bags' Groove," "Confirmation" and "'Round Midnight."
