Smokin' Joe KUBEK Band feat. B'nois King - Texas Cadillac 1993

Smokin' Joe KUBEK Band feat. B'nois King - Texas Cadillac 1993

Blues

What you hear on Smokin' Joe Kubek's third Bullseye Blues album is what you get live: Smokin' Joe and Bnois King bouncing guitar riffs back and forth  Bnois preaching the blues and a rock-solid, road-tested rhythm section that knows its way around a shuffle, With each successive album, and the extensive national touring that has resulted, Joe, Bnois and the band have sharpened their attack and tightened their material. It creates a sound so big, it could only come from Texas!

Another young Texas axeman from the old school, Smokin' Joe Kubek issued his band's debut disc in 1991 on Bullseye Blues, Steppin' Out Texas Style. Kubek was already playing his smokin' guitar on the Lone State chitlin circuit at age 14, supporting such musicians as Freddie King. Soon, he formed his own band and began playing a number of bars across Dallas. In the '80s, he met guitarist/vocalist Bnois King, a native of Monroe, LA, and the duo formed the first edition of the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band. The Smokin' Joe Kubek Band began playing the rest of the Southwest in the late '80s. In 1991, they signed to Bullseye Blues, releasing their debut, Steppin' Out Texas Style, the same year. Following its release, the band launched their first national tour. For the rest of the '90s, the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band toured the United States and toured frequently and issued records like 1993's Texas Cadillac, 1996's Got My Mind Back, and 2000's Bite Me. In 2003 Kubek and guitarist/vocalist Bnois King released Roadhouse Research on the Blind Pig label. The duo's second release for Blind Pig, Show Me the Money, came out in 2004. A single-disc collection of some of the best tracks from the Bullseye Blues years, Served Up Texas Style, came out in 2005. A third album from Blind Pig Records, My Heart's in Texas, was released in 2006. Another joint effort with King, Blood Brothers, appeared in 2008.

Smokin' Joe Kubek's third Rounder album juggles blues-rock originals with faithful, exuberant covers of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Little Walter Jacobs, among others. Kubek is a good, sometimes captivating guitarist and entertaining singer, if not the greatest pure vocalist, and the band rips through the 11 cuts in a relaxed, yet passionate fashion. But it's hard for any longtime blues fan to get excited over hearing another version of "Little Red Rooster" or "Mean Old World"; it's impossible to reinvent Delta, urban, Texas or West Coast blues. The solution is probably to make the best music you can and hope you hook those willing to listen to contemporary blues rather than spurn it for the originals.

The Smokin' Joe Kubek Band, featuring Bnois King, cut its first album for Bullseye Blues in 1991 (an import CD, Axe Man, preceded it in 1990). Although the band has recorded songs by Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Ron Levy (their producer), and others, most of their music is original. Joe has been playing blues guitar in clubs since he was 14. In the band, he plays most of the guitar leads and writes much of the music. Bnois writes most of the lyrics, sings the leads, and plays rhythm guitar and some leads. (Joe and Bnois often switch on lead and rhythm guitar in different parts of the same song, egging each other on to greater and greater intensity.) The band's distinctive sound is a blend of tough Texas blues spiced with jazz, which Bnois played before joining Joe. The rhythm section, usually consisting of bass guitar and drums, has changed several times since the band was formed. After their debut CD, The Axeman, they have produced seven CDs on the Bullseye Blues label and then one on Blind Pig:
Steppin' Out Texas Style, 1991
Chain Smokin' Texas Style, 1992
Texas Cadillac, 1994
Cryin' for the Moon, 1995
Got My Mind Back, 1996
Take Your Best Shot, 1998
Bite Me, 2000
