Wallace COLEMAN - The Bad Weather Blues 2003

Wallace COLEMAN - The Bad Weather Blues 2003
Label: Pinto Blue Music

Blues

"Bad Weather Blues" kicks things up a few notches when compared to previous outings from The Wallace Coleman Band. While remaining on-course with their classic Chicago Blues approach, this mostly original effort shows more growth, confidence, and self-assurance. Covers are primarily limited to Little Walter's Everybody Needs Somebody, Robert Lockwood's Mean Red Spider, and St. Louis Jimmy's Going Down Slow, although the crafty writing on the remainder of the set blends perfectly with the Windy City classics. Billy Flynn and Bob Stroger step in as guests and shine with the rest of the band. Highlights include the title track, a harp-shuffling Billy Bob Jam, the stop-time humor of High Tech Blues, and Coleman's Blue Mist, a Little Walter-like chromatic harp standout. (CR)

Living Blues Award Winner (Harmonica) Wallace Coleman turns the tables in this 3rd release on his Pinto Blue Music label. This time it is predominantly original (10 originals; 4 covers). In addition, Coleman and band are joined by Blues veterans Bob Stroger (bass) and Billy Flynn (guitar). The result is a driving Chicago sound when called for, with Coleman at the fore; or sweet, thoughtful sounds, such as the original instrumental "Blue Mist," among others. Flynn also lends masterful slide guitar on several tracks. This CD offers something for everyone, but Traditional Blues lovers will especially appreciate what they hear.

Don't take what follows as gospel. Understand this: A local band release isn't like a release on a major label. The latter makes its way through a structured system, its progress carefully planned and its release date set months in advance. A local CD might appear suddenly, pressed into your hand in a club one night by a musician whose band you didn't even know had been recording. On the other hand, there's the band that's been saying at every gig for the past eight months that "we've got a new CD out in a few weeks." Some bands book clubs for CD release parties while others get their shipment of CDs and sneak them out to stores piecemeal whenever they've got time.

So any list of upcoming local releases is going to be partial, and some we've been told are coming this fall will end up not appearing until next year. Still, music fans can expect a varied crop of new records from area musicians in the next few months. From veteran blues harmonica player Wallace Coleman who releases his third CD, The Bad Weather Blues, at Wilbert's on September 13 to heavy metal band Gatlin, who will be issuing a 10-track EP of demos, live tracks and its Dawg Pound song at the Odeon on December 20, there's something for almost any music fan.
