David ”Fathead” NEWMAN - Lonely Avenue 1972

David ”Fathead” NEWMAN - Lonely Avenue 1972

Jazz

An OK but not too essential LP, this effort by David Newman (heard on tenor and flute) leans more to the R&B side, featuring Newman with an oversized rhythm section that includes vibraphonist Roy Ayers (who also plays keyboards), Bags Costello on organ and piano, and guitarist Cornell Dupree. The tunes, mostly recent originals (also the traditional "Precious Lord") are interpreted soulfully by Newman, but little memorable occurs.

One of the nice electric albums that David Newman cut with Roy Ayers, and a record with a smooth 70’s funky sound that works better than some of his 60’s recordings. Tracks include Roy Ayers’ great tunes “Fuzz” and “Fire Weaver”, plus “3/4 Of The Time”, “Symphonette”, and the title cut.
From Dusty Groove.
