Sonny STITT - Plays 1956

Sonny STITT - Plays 1956

Jazz

The sound of Hank Crawford's alto sax playing has always impressed me as emotive and soulfully expressive. On this CD Sonny plays with the same
"heart and soul" heard on Crawford's best tracks. Although Stitt's early playing was initially influenced by Charlie Parker and some of the tracks on this CD give credence to Stitt's Parker-like style, other tracks are strictly Stitt. Regardless, the album tracks are superbly rendered by one of jazz's premier alto saxophonists. His rendition of "The Nearness of You" always "stops me in my tracks" and gives me pause to appreciate the feeling he imparts to the song. The entire album is a listener's delight. Great accompaniment by Hank Jones, Shadow Wilson, Wendell Marshall, and Freddie Green add to the enjoyment and expressiveness. Quite frankly, it's an album that never gets old . . .
it's energy, warmth, and musicianship begs the proverbial encore. Originally recorded in 1956 this album, "Sonny Stitt Plays", is a classic . . . one that captures a youthful Sonny in his prime.
