Pinetop PERKINS & Hubert SUMLIN - Legends 1998
Blues
Renowned sidemen Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin may have played for employers who were bitter rivals (that would be Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, respectively), but they managed to sidestep this acrimony when they started touring together during the '80s. The resulting friendship and deep mutual respect eventually led to 1998's LEGENDS, an 11-track collection of blues standards and originals.
Throughout their collaboration, pianist Perkins and guitarist Sumlin take a laconic approach to classics associated with B.B. King ("Rock Me Baby"), Willie Dixon ("Hoochie Man"), Jimmy Reed ("Shame, Shame, Shame"), and Elmore James ("The Sky Is Crying"). Even more impressive are some of the original songs each man brought to these sessions. Perkins' "Sunnyland Slim" is a rambling narrative about his fellow pianist/legend, while Sumlin growls away and displays nimble soloing throughout "Nutcracker." The most upbeat number on LEGENDS is the swinging shuffle "She Walks Right In," in which backup players Annie Raines and Doug Wainoris show off how well the younger generation is carrying on the legacy of the blues.
LEGENDS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
